The Katar range is located in Syunik Province in Armenia the highest peak of which is Khustup mountain. The highest point of Mount Khustup is at 3200m above sea level. The mountain is rich with alpine meadows and some part of it is covered with forests.
It is also considered to be a sacred mountain as it was a special pilgrimage destination even in ancient times. The mountain was also of strategic importance during the 1920s. Here lie the relics of Garegin Nzhdeh, one of the most honored and undisputed heroes of Armenia.
The best time to have the trekking is from mid-April to September. The hiking trail is about 15 km starting from an altitude of 1060 m. At the highest point of the mountain, you will be at 3200 m above sea level. The first day's hike will take around 4 hours. The second day's hike will take up to 7 hours for you to reach the peak of the mountain.
When planning on having trekking to Mount Khustup, you should consider having at least 3-4 days dedicated to the trip. The trip's first day involves a ride to Kapan city which is about 5-6 hours of drive from Yerevan. So leaving early will be a good choice. And even though the driving is long, you can enjoy the breathtaking views opening from the window of your car.
After reaching Kapan town, driving a few more km you will reach the village Baghaburj, from where you will start the hike of the first day. From the moment you start the hike, you will be amazed by the view of the mount opening to you. After hiking for around 4 hours, you will reach a small hidden village called Navchay. This is where you will have your first camping overnight. Set up your tents, make a small dinner on a campfire, and enjoy the night sky full of stars.
The following morning you will start the hike early and reach the highest point of the mount. The landscapes opening from the slopes of the mountain will astound you. The beautiful flora, wild horses, and fresh air are something to experience.
After hiking for about an hour you will get closer to the peak. The trail will take you to a natural spring, where you can have a short break, drink the aline water, freshen up and continue your hike. When you reach the top of the mountain you will see the monument that is established in the honored memory of Garegin Nzhdeh.
The breathtaking scenery opening from the top of the mountain will make you believe that you are higher than the clouds. After admiring the picturesque sceneries, taking pictures, and having some rest you can get back to the camp area and have another overnight here.
On the last day of your trekking, you will get back to Baghaburj village. The hike will be much shorter around 3 hours. When reaching Kapan town, you can have a small lunch and head to the capital. In case you decide to prolong your trip to Syunik Province, you can have stops at Khndzoresk Village or Tatev monastery near Goris town.
However, one thing is certain, the feelings and excitement you get from your hike to the sacred mountain will be with you for a long time, and you will surely want to come back here again!
